Blossom

The Mimosa, also known as Acacia dealbata, is a beautiful early-flowering tree native to Australia. Its blossom is delicate, sweet, and lightly scented on warmer days.

Mimosa Flowers

The Mimosa, or Acacia dealbata, is a spectacular sight in any garden thanks to its unique flowers. The tree produces abundant fluffy, round, yellow flowers that bloom from January to May. These flowers emit a subtle, sweet fragrance that is pleasant for both humans and pollinators. The scent of the Mimosa can help create a relaxing and natural atmosphere in your garden. Attracting bees and butterflies makes the Mimosa not only a visual centerpiece but also a contribution to the local ecosystem.

Leaf Colors and Shapes

The leaf of the Mimosa is green, feathery, and composed of thousands of smaller leaflets. You can enjoy the evergreen foliage of the Acacia dealbata throughout the year.

Frost

The Mimosa is sensitive to frost. Therefore, it is best to keep it in a pot so that it can be easily moved to a frost-free location. Planting it in the ground is also possible, but keep in mind that it should be protected from frost and/or placed in a sheltered spot.

Total Height

Under ideal conditions, the tree can grow quickly, especially in warmth. Young trees often grow rapidly in the first few years after planting, gaining height quickly. The tree can reach a height of up to 8 meters when fully grown.

The Mimosa Tree in Your Garden

The Mimosa tree is an excellent choice for various garden designs. Here are some suggestions for planting Mimosa in your garden:

As a standalone tree: The Mimosa can serve as a striking standalone element in your garden, especially when in bloom. Its vibrant colors and unique shape make it a natural focal point.

In a Mediterranean garden: The Mimosa complements a Mediterranean garden style, particularly when paired with olive trees, lavender, and other drought-tolerant plants.

Border plant: Use the Mimosa along the edges of your garden to add height and color. This works well in larger gardens where the tree has enough space to grow.

At entrances and patios: Planted in pots, the Mimosa can be placed at entrances or on patios, creating an inviting and fragrant welcome.

Care and Maintenance Tips

To keep your Mimosa tree healthy and beautiful, here are some essential care and maintenance tips:

  • Watering needs: Mimosa trees require regular watering, especially during dry periods. Ensure the soil remains moist but avoid waterlogging.
  • Fertilization: Fertilize your Mimosa annually with a general-purpose fertilizer to promote healthy growth.
  • Pruning: Prune the Mimosa as needed after flowering to maintain a good shape and remove dead or damaged branches.
  • Frost protection: Since the Mimosa is sensitive to frost, protect the tree from severe frost, especially if it's planted in the ground. Consider planting it in a pot for easy relocation to a frost-free location during winter.
  • Disease and pest control: Monitor your Mimosa for signs of diseases or pests and intervene with appropriate treatment methods if necessary.

How to plant the tree?

  1. Determine the final location of the tree and ensure it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other obstacles that may hinder the tree's growth.
  2. Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting substrate.
  3. Adjust the planting hole to the height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
  4. Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to settle. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
  5. Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
  6. Insert a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly into the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
  7. Now, place the watering ring or create a mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the ground.
