Growth habit
The Styphnolobium japonicum 'Regent' (Synonym: Sophora japonica 'Regent') is an American cultivar of the honey tree, characterized by a notably straight trunk and vigorous growth habit.
Branches
Notable about the Sophora japonica 'Regent' are the green branches with light-colored lenticels. These stand out well in the green branch wood.
Scent
In late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of creamy white, fragrant flowers that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. If the branch breaks, a sweet, honey-like scent is released.
Leaf color
The leaf of the Styphnolobium japonicum 'Regent' is characterized by the compound, dark green leaflets that stand on a leaf stalk.
Flowering
The honey tree blooms at a young age from June with white-yellow flowers clustered together. After flowering, small, brown pods grow on the tree, adding an extra detail.
Location
Hardening is well tolerated by this American cultivar, and it grows well on almost any non-poor soil. Planting on peat soil, however, is not recommended.
Bees and butterflies
The Styphnolobium japonicum 'Regent' is less susceptible to diseases and is a good nectar tree for bees as well as a host tree for butterflies.
How to plant the tree?
- Determine the final location of the tree and ensure it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other obstacles that may hinder the tree's growth.
- Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting substrate.
- Adjust the planting hole to the height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
- Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to settle. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
- Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
- Insert a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly into the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
- Now, place the watering ring or create a mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the ground.
