Growth Habit
The Juglans regia 'Broadview' is a smaller, slower-growing cultivar of the Walnut tree. The tree is also known as Walnut or Okkernoot.
Edible Nuts and Size
For years, the Juglans regia 'Broadview' has been widely planted in Dutch gardens and orchards as a standard variety due to its excellent edible nuts. Its slightly smaller size compared to the common Juglans regia is also a factor.
Leaf Color and Leaf Form
The leaves are bright green and compound, meaning that multiple leaflets hang from a single leaf stem.
Flowering
Shortly after leafing out, the Juglans regia 'Broadview' blooms in May with inconspicuous green catkins. These catkins are male, and the somewhat smaller flowers are female. This doesn't always happen simultaneously. The tree is, therefore, partially self-pollinating but yields even more fruit with a good pollinator nearby.
Location
The Juglans regia 'Broadview' thrives on almost any soil type. However, it cannot tolerate excessively acidic or wet soil. The tree is often used on lawns in private gardens, thanks to its ability to repel mosquitoes, providing a natural mosquito-repelling tree that also produces edible fruits.
How to plant the tree?
- Determine the final location of the tree and ensure it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other obstacles that may hinder the tree's growth.
- Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting substrate.
- Adjust the planting hole to the height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
- Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to settle. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
- Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
- Insert a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly into the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
- Now, place the watering ring or create a mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the ground.
