Growth Habit

Discover the beauty of the Cornus kousa 'China Girl', also known as the Japanese Flowering Dogwood. This tree grows slowly but boasts beautiful white flowers and lovely branching. Adding this young Japanese Flowering Dogwood to your garden will allow you to enjoy its large white blooms!

If you prefer light pink flowers, the Young Large-Flowered Japanese Dogwood Tree | Cornus kousa 'Satomi' might be for you.

Leaf Color

The leaves of the Cornus kousa 'China Girl' are dark green. In the fall, the leaves of the Cornus kousa 'China Girl' turn shades of purple to red.

Flowering

Between May and June, the tree blooms profusely with beautiful white flowers. By July, these flowers gradually change to a soft pink color. This colorful process adds a unique natural beauty to your garden during the early summer season.

Self-Pollinating

The tree self-pollinates, so planting only one specimen is sufficient to ensure beautiful flowering and fruiting. This makes it easy to enjoy the beautiful flowers and fruits without needing to plant multiple trees.

Fruits

In September, the red fruits appear, resembling raspberries, and are edible. However, the skin tastes somewhat bitter.

Location

The Cornus kousa 'China Girl' thrives well in almost all nutrient-rich, well-drained soils and is cold hardy. Additionally, the Cornus kousa 'China Girl' is relatively easy to maintain, as its branches have a horizontal growth habit in layers. The tree only requires some shaping pruning, and dead branches can be removed. This is best done in June.

How to plant the tree?

  1. Determine the final location of the tree and ensure that it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other things that could hinder the tree's growth.
  2. Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting mix.
  3. Place the planting hole at a height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
  4. Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to drain. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
  5. Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
  6. Place a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly in the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
  7. Now, place the watering ring or create a small mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the soil.
