Total height
The Betula utilis 'Doorenbos', or Himalayan Birch, is a Dutch selection that can reach up to 15 meters in height.
Bark and Branches
It is the birch whose bark is the whitest of all birch species in later age. However, in younger years, the branches and trunk are brown.
Twigs
The twigs of the Betula utilis 'Doorenbos', also known as the Young Himalayan Birch, are generally thin, flexible, and have a striking chestnut brown to reddish-brown color. This shrub is known for its attractive bark and twigs, which form a decorative element, especially in winter when the leaves have fallen.
Leaf shape and color
The Betula utilis 'Doorenbos', or Young Himalayan Birch, has oval leaves. The edges of the leaves are often double serrated, meaning they have fine teeth along the edges. The leaves are green in color and sometimes have a slight hairiness on the underside.
Autumn coloration
The autumn coloration of the Betula utilis 'Doorenbos', or Young Himalayan Birch, is a beautiful sight in the autumn garden. The green leaves of the tree gradually change to shades of yellow, golden yellow, and orange before eventually turning brown and falling from the tree.
Flowering
The Himalayan Birch shrub blooms in April with catkins up to 12 cm long. The shrub produces hanging male and female catkins as inflorescences. The male catkins are elongated and hang in groups on the branches. They produce pollen that is dispersed by the wind to pollinate the female catkins.
Location
The shrub has a rather shallow root system and is therefore not suitable for planting in pavements. The Betula utilis 'Doorenbos', or Young Himalayan Birch, thrives best in a location with full sun to partial shade.
