Well-known Appearance

The Sorbus aucuparia edulis, also known as the Rowan tree, is a familiar sight for many people due to its striking blossoms or fruits.

Blooming

The Sorbus aucuparia edulis blooms in the months of May-June with white flowers that are very conspicuous and also serve as a food source for many bees and butterflies.

Berries

After blooming, the Sorbus aucuparia edulis forms its berries in autumn, which have a bright orange-red color and are a true treat for many birds.

Leaves

The leaves of the Sorbus aucuparia edulis consist of odd-pinnate leaflets, with 5 to 10 leaf pairs on each leaf stalk. The leaves are green and change color in the autumn to various hues of yellow, orange, and red.

Bees, Butterflies, and Birds

The white flowers provide food for bees and butterflies. The orange-red berries are an essential food source for birds.

Location

The Sorbus aucuparia edulis thrives on almost any type of soil, provided it contains sufficient nutrients and is well-draining.

The Sorbus aucuparia edulis prefers a sunny or semi-shaded location.

Total Height

The Sorbus aucuparia edulis can grow into a tree with a maximum height of 8 to 10 meters.

How to plant the tree?

  1. Determine the final location of the tree and ensure it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other obstacles that may hinder the tree's growth.
  2. Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting substrate.
  3. Adjust the planting hole to the height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
  4. Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to settle. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
  5. Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
  6. Insert a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly into the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
  7. Now, place the watering ring or create a mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the ground.
