Leaves

The leaves of the *Nyssa sylvatica* stand out for their beauty. In summer, they are glossy green, turning into vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow in autumn, giving any garden a warm look. The leaves have a sturdy, oval shape and also provide shade. This young Black Tupelo tree, *Nyssa sylvatica*, is an excellent choice for those who appreciate a colorful and easy-to-maintain tree.

Growth Form

The growth form of the Black Tupelo tree is slow but very graceful. This tree grows upright with a strong, straight trunk and a broad, pyramid-shaped crown. In its early years, the shape of the *Nyssa sylvatica* is compact, but as it matures, it develops a more open and natural appearance. The branches grow horizontally. The young Black Tupelo tree reaches a height of 10 to 15 meters when fully grown, making this *Nyssa sylvatica* suitable for both gardens and parks.

Location

The location of the Black Tupelo tree is crucial for healthy growth. This tree thrives best in a spot with plenty of sun or partial shade. The *Nyssa sylvatica* prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil but can adapt to other soil types. The Tupelo tree is hardy and resistant to changing weather conditions. However, choose a sheltered spot in your garden to protect the tree from extreme wind.

How to plant the tree?

1. Determine the final location of the tree and make sure it is free of cables, debris, old plants, and other things that could hinder the tree's growth.

2. Dig a planting hole that is twice as wide as the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole thoroughly and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting soil.

3. Adjust the depth of the planting hole so that the root ball fits perfectly, and press the soil down firmly.

4. Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to fully drain. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.

5. Place the tree or plant into the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this could cause the roots to rot.

6. Insert a sturdy tree stake or bamboo stick into the ground on the side from which the strongest wind comes.

7. Create a watering ring or form a small mound of soil around the tree to allow water to seep into the ground around it.
