Edible Berries
Even at a young age, the Ribes nigrum produces edible berries that are black in color. The berries themselves have a relatively sour taste, but when processed into jam or juice, their flavors are fully released. The black currants naturally contain a large amount of vitamin C. The berries are an important food source for birds, giving the Ribes nigrum significant ecological value.
Bloom and Growth Form
Before the berries appear on the plant, the black currant blooms with inconspicuous yellow flowers that are well visited by bees and butterflies. The Ribes nigrum (black currant) produces juicy berries at a relatively young age. This shrub can reach a height of 100 to 150 centimeters.
Pruning Method
After harvesting the berries, it is best to prune the shrub. You maintain the shrub by cutting off the branches that have borne fruit, allowing young branches to bear fruit the following year.
Location
The Ribes nigrum (black currant) prefers to be in the sun or partial shade in loose, nutrient-rich, and moisture-retentive soil. The black currant is a naturally occurring plant on nutrient-rich soils.
