Height
The Morus nigra, also known as the Black Mulberry, is a medium-sized, characteristic tree. This Black Mulberry (Morus Nigra) can grow up to 8 meters tall.
Leaf Shape and Color
With its fresh green leaves, it is a beautiful tree to behold. The wide leaf is irregularly incised and green in color. The leaves are hairy on the underside and feel rough to the touch. This young Black Mulberry tree is not evergreen.
Flowering
In spring, the Black Mulberry blooms with green catkins, which can be male or female. The flowering period, which occurs around May-June, is followed by green fruits that turn dark red to almost black as they ripen.
Edible Fruits
After flowering, the fruits resembling blackberries appear. These fruits are deep red or black in color. The fruits are edible, fleshy in texture, and have a sweet taste.
Growth Habit
In old age, it becomes a characteristic tree with a semi-open crown. The trunk and branches are then gnarled with a dark color. The young branches have a fresh green color. This adds beautiful liveliness to your garden!
Location
The Mulberry requires an airy, moisture-retaining soil and prefers lime-rich soils. Young plants can be sensitive to frost, but in old age, the tree is hardy. This Mulberry tree prefers a sunny and sheltered spot in the garden.
How to Plant the Tree?
- Determine the final location of the tree and ensure that it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other things that could hinder the tree's growth.
- Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting mix.
- Place the planting hole at a height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
- Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to drain. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
- Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
- Place a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly in the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
- Now, place the watering ring or create a small mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the soil.
