Total height

The Robinia pseudoacacia 'Frisia', also known as the Yellow Acacia, is a yellow-leaved cultivar of the common Acacia. The tree can reach a height of 15 meters.

Growth habit

The Yellow Acacia is particularly vigorous in its young years, growing relatively upright. As it ages, the crown becomes more oval-shaped and tends to spread out, reaching a width of up to 8 meters.

Branches

The young branches of the Robinia pseudoacacia 'Frisia' are brown and feature distinctive red thorns on the wood.

Leaf color and shape

The deep yellow leaves are arranged alternately on a leaf stem and typically consist of 9 to 20 leaflets per leaf stem. The Yellow Acacia does not bloom every year, but when it does, it produces beautiful white flowers in June.

Fruits

The fruits of the Young Yellow Acacia Tree, Robinia pseudoacacia 'Frisia', are pods that appear in late summer to autumn. These pods are elongated and contain seeds. Although the seeds are toxic when consumed, the pods themselves are not toxic. The pod-shaped fruits do not appear every year on the tree.

Location

Due to its vigorous growth habit, this cultivar is susceptible to wind damage, so it is best planted in a sheltered location to prevent branch breakage. Otherwise, the Yellow Acacia has few requirements for soil and grows on almost all soil types with shallow roots. Because of its strong growth and later broadening crown, this tree is ideally suited for planting in a spacious location, such as a large lawn or in a park.

How to plant the tree?

  1. Determine the final location of the tree and ensure it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other obstacles that may hinder the tree's growth.
  2. Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting substrate.
  3. Adjust the planting hole to the height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
  4. Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to settle. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
  5. Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
  6. Insert a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly into the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
  7. Now, place the watering ring or create a mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the ground.
