Total height

The Betula utilis 'Doorenbos' or Himalayan birch is a Dutch selection that can reach up to 15 meters in height.

Bark and branches

It is the birch whose bark is the whitest of all in later age. However, at a younger age, the branches and the trunk are brown.

Twigs

The young twigs are typically glossy and reddish-brown with lenticels on them. These twigs create a nice contrast with the tree's white bark.

Leaf shape and leaf color

Large oval-shaped leaves with serrated edges, which are dark green in color and look vibrant and fresh in the summer. In the autumn, the leaves can turn to yellow gold, giving the tree a picturesque appearance.

Flowering

In the spring, the tree produces hanging catkins that are initially yellowish-brown and later turn into yellowish-green tones. These catkins contain both male and female flowers and can grow up to 12 cm long. After pollination, small round fruits appear, which ripen into cone-shaped fruits with winged seeds.

Root system

The tree has a relatively shallow root system and is therefore not suitable for paving.

How to plant the tree?

  1. Determine the final location of the tree and ensure it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other obstacles that may hinder the tree's growth.
  2. Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting substrate.
  3. Adjust the planting hole to the height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
  4. Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to settle. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
  5. Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
  6. Insert a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly into the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
  7. Now, place the watering ring or create a mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the ground.
