Properties

The young Himalayan Cedar | Cedrus deodara has some remarkable properties. This tree belongs to the conifer species of cedar and can reach a height of 50-60 meters in its native habitat. Outside of that, it can grow to 15-20 meters. Once this mature height is reached, this Himalayan Cedar creates a shaded area. The blue-green needles are not only beautiful to look at but also emit a delightful fragrance. Additionally, they are winter hardy.

Growth Habit

The growth of this Cedrus deodara is characterized by fast and upright growth. This tree can reach a height of 15-30 meters, and in its native habitat, it can grow 30-60 meters tall. The beautiful broad, pyramidal crown with blue-green needles develops during its early years. The branches grow horizontally, forming a shaded area. The Himalayan Cedar has a strong, sturdy trunk that withstands wind well.

Location

This cedar requires well-drained and nutrient-rich soil. This young tree thrives best in a sunny to partially shaded location, where it receives enough light for optimal growth. It is well winter-hardy and can adapt to various soil types. The Himalayan Cedar naturally occurs in mountainous regions, making it well-suited to withstand wind and cold.

How to plant the tree?

1. Determine the final location of the tree and make sure it is free of cables, debris, old plants, and other things that could hinder the tree's growth.

2. Dig a planting hole that is twice as wide as the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole thoroughly and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting soil.

3. Adjust the depth of the planting hole so that the root ball fits perfectly, and press the soil down firmly.

4. Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to fully drain. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.

5. Place the tree or plant into the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this could cause the roots to rot.

6. Insert a sturdy tree stake or bamboo stick into the ground on the side from which the strongest wind comes.

7. Create a watering ring or form a small mound of soil around the tree to allow water to seep into the ground around it.
