Growth

Discover the Asimina triloba, also known as Pawpaw, at Amitis. This lesser-known fruit tree grows slowly into a small tree or shrub. Its growth is promoted by moist, well-draining soils and sunny conditions.

Leaf Shape

The Asimina triloba has a long and oval leaf. With their glossy green color and soft texture, they are a beautiful addition to gardens. Explore the natural beauty of the Pawpaw tree at Amitis, where we inspire garden enthusiasts.

Flowering

The young Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) blooms in spring with dark brown/purple flowers on bare branches. If pollination occurs, fruits develop here. The flowering period is from late April to May and lasts about 3 weeks.

Fruits

The fruit is 5 to 15 cm long and potato-shaped. The taste of the fruit is somewhat similar to mango/banana.

Despite the exotic appearance of the fruit, they ripen without problems in the Netherlands. It can take 5 to 8 years before the Pawpaw bears its first fruits. For fruit set, the plant requires cross-pollination, which can be achieved by planting a second plant nearby.

How to plant the tree?

  1. Determine the final location of the tree and ensure that it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other things that could hinder the tree's growth.
  2. Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting mix.
  3. Place the planting hole at a height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
  4. Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to drain. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
  5. Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
  6. Place a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly in the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
  7. Now, place the watering ring or create a small mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the soil.
