Cultivar and total height
The Crataegus persimilis 'Splendens', or Plum-Leaved Hawthorn, is a cultivar of the common Crataegus monogyna, which can reach a height of 8 meters.
Leaf color
The main difference with the Crataegus monogyna is the splendid autumn color that this cultivar exhibits. In the fall, the green leaves transform into a beautiful array of colors ranging from orange to red.
Thorns, trunk, and branches
The thorns that grow on this species are also significantly larger, reaching up to 5 cm in length. The trunk and branches are gray-brown in color.
Flowering
In spring, around May, the Crataegus monogyna blooms with beautiful white blossom flowers. These flowers appear in clusters, creating a stunning full view.
Fruits and birds
After flowering, orange-red fruits appear, which are not edible but serve as a good food source for birds.
Location and frost resistance
It grows well in nutrient-rich, well-draining soil and is also resistant to frost. Additionally, the best location is in partial sun.
How to plant the tree?
- Determine the final location of the tree and ensure it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other obstacles that may hinder the tree's growth.
- Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting substrate.
- Adjust the planting hole to the height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
- Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to settle. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
- Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
- Insert a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly into the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
- Now, place the watering ring or create a mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the ground.
