Cultivar
The Castanea sativa 'Anny's Summer Red' is a cultivar of the sweet chestnut tree.
Growth habit
The difference with the common cultivar is that the Castanea sativa 'Anny's Summer Red' is smaller and also grows more slowly.
Total height
The maximum height of this young sweet chestnut tree is 7 meters, making it very suitable for any garden.
Leaf shape and leaf color
The young leaves emerge in red and are hairy underneath. As summer progresses, the leaves turn green, and in autumn, they change to yellow-brown. This provides you with a lively and fresh garden almost all year round.
Catkins/honey scent
In spring, long yellow-white catkins develop on the tree, emitting a strong honey scent. This sweet fragrance attracts bees.
Chestnuts
The characteristic sweet chestnuts, which grow in prickly husks on the tree, ripen in October. After that, they fall from the tree and can be eaten.
Soil type
This sweet chestnut tree does not have many requirements for soil type. It is resistant to drought and grows on almost all nutrient-rich soil types.
How to plant the tree?
- Determine the final location of the tree and ensure it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other obstacles that may hinder the tree's growth.
- Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting substrate.
- Adjust the planting hole to the height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
- Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to settle. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
- Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
- Insert a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly into the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
- Now, place the watering ring or create a mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the ground.
