The Crataegus laev. 'Rosea Flore Pleno'

The Crataegus laev. 'Rosea Flore Pleno,' also known as the Two-flowered Hawthorn, is a beautifully blooming hawthorn that is ideal for small gardens and/or challenging growing conditions.

Location

This hawthorn species has low demands and grows on almost any soil, even if it is too moist, polluted, or has very little nutrients. Even in coastal areas, this tree thrives well.

Flowering

In spring, the Crataegus laev. 'Rosea Flore Pleno' blooms abundantly with small pink flowers resembling roses, clustered on the tree.

Fruits

These small pink flowers are followed by dark red to black fruits in the fall, which hang on the tree until deep into winter and serve as a true food source for various birds.

Leaf color and shape

The leaves of the Crataegus laev. 'Rosea Flore Pleno' are dark green with deep lobes and an attractive form.

Autumn coloration

In autumn, these leaves change to yellow to brownish-red tones before falling from the tree.

Thorns

Another striking feature of this Two-flowered Hawthorn is the 2.5 cm long thorns that grow on this tree.

Bees, bumblebees, butterflies, and birds

The Crataegus laev. 'Rosea Flore Pleno' is also highly favored by wildlife. With its abundant flowering, it serves as a food source for various bees, bumblebees, and butterflies. In the fall, the fruits, which can hang on until deep into winter, become a food source for birds.

Pruning

The Crataegus laev. 'Rosea Flore Pleno' is also well-suited for shaping through pruning, making it suitable as a bonsai tree or as a hedge or tree that has been pruned into a specific shape.

How to plant the tree?

  1. Determine the final location of the tree and ensure it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other obstacles that may hinder the tree's growth.
  2. Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting substrate.
  3. Adjust the planting hole to the height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
  4. Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to settle. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
  5. Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
  6. Insert a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly into the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
  7. Now, place the watering ring or create a mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the ground.
