Cultivar

The Liquidambar styraciflua 'Aurea', also known as the Golden Variegated Sweetgum, is a cultivar of the common Liquidambar styraciflua. This cultivar is distinguished by its somewhat slower growth and the yellow-variegated leaves during spring and summer.

Crown and Branches

The crown from thisyellow-variegated sweetgum tree grows narrow with a straight trunk and widens as it matures. The young branches are yellow-green and gradually turn gray-brown over time.

Branches and Trunk

The young branches and trunk of the Golden Variegated Sweetgum are initially smooth, but over time, corky ridges develop. These are wings on the bark made of corky, dead tissue of the tree. These corky ridges give the tree a particularly decorative appearance.

Leaf Shape and Leaf Color

The leaf of the Liquidambar styraciflua 'Aurea' is perhaps the most spectacular feature of the entire tree. It is star-shaped with five lobes and has a pinkish hue when budding on the variegated leaf.

Autumn Coloration

During the autumn period, the leaves change from green to a beautiful combination of yellow, orange, and red. The yellow leaves often have a subtle green stripe or spot, adding to the unique appearance of the tree.

Standort

How to plant the tree?

  1. Determine the final location of the tree and ensure it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other obstacles that may hinder the tree's growth.
  2. Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting substrate.
  3. Adjust the planting hole to the height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
  4. Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to settle. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
  5. Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
  6. Insert a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly into the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
  7. Now, place the watering ring or create a mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the ground.
